Long Lines

A dog enjoying off-leash freedom in a wide outdoor space

Almost every client who comes to Brilliant Pup wants to teach their dog reliable off-leash recall. It's one of the most rewarding skills you can build — and also one of the hardest, because the environment is full of interesting smells, creatures, and opportunities that compete with you for your dog's attention.

Reliable recall starts in the house, in the same room. Any time your dog comes to you, reward them. The goal is to teach your dog that when you say "Here" — or whatever cue you choose — they will be paid generously with an incredibly delectable food reward.

But any time your dog runs off to chase a squirrel and leaves you calling, you just taught them to run off. That's where the long line comes in: it gives your dog freedom to explore while preserving your ability to follow through every single time.

At Brilliant Pup we love the long lines made by our friends at Rawah Dog Outfitters. If you've worked with us, you've probably seen one in action.
